Philippa Pearce OBE (22 January 1920 – 21 December 2006) was an English author of children's books. Her most famous work is the time slip fantasy novel Tom's Midnight Garden, which won the 1958 Carnegie Medal from the Library Association, as the year's outstanding children's book by a British subject. Pearce was four further times a commended runner-up for the Medal.

It's good for a english learners in a intermediate upperintermediate level.The plot is ciurious and very interesting. The lenguage is easy and not difficult.

After having recieved my Kindle PW I found this book, read the description and bought it.I don't want to tell anything about the contents, but please: Read the book!!!You'll definitely feel enchanted afterwards.A new treasure in my library!!! :-)

This book is like a nice dream - nothing bad happens, the story flows like a calm river... Ideal bedtime story or simply to relax and dream back into childhood.

If Philippa Pearce were still alive I would really love to thank her personally for this wonderful story. I stunbled across it by chance and bought it because I know a boy named Tom. And I was not disappointed. The story flows slowly, just like the stories I used to read when I was a boy myself. No "hard cuts" no "chasing scenes", just a wonderful little story well told.In a world of big cities, of concrete, of cars and of walls a garden can be a great treasure for a kid growing up. In this book, Tom Long, a young boy, is sent to his aunt and uncle to avoid getting the measles from his brother Peter. Being in quarantine, Tom is not allowed to go anywhere out of the flat and even worse his uncle wants him to stay in bed from early evening until morning. No walking around at night, no reading. Lights off! Kids do need their sleep. But not being able to sleep so long after a boring day in a flat, Tom lies awake in his bed until the grandfather clock in the house strikes thirteen. When he goes down the stairs to have a look at the clock he finds a back door that leads into a wonderful garden that is only there around midnight. I won't tell you the rest of the story. You really should read it yourself. It's worth it.

I read the book at the age of twelve and I remembered it when I deeply fell in love for the first time in my early twenties. My experience of the girl I loved and the way she changed in the intervals of our relationship into someone different, whereas I clung to the original perception of her personality, made me think about time, change, personality and the possibility of a "time-surpassing love" of someone's "eternally true" personality. The novel shows deep insights into the mysteries of time and love and conveys the feelings of true if impossible love against time.
