Spider-Man: The Art of the Game is a spectacular art book. I'm always impressed by the publisher Titan Books, and the quality of the book is great. The book is broken up into three parts: City of Hope, City of Fear, and City of War. Each part introduces story and elements of the game in respective order, and in synchronization in how everything unfolds within the video-game. It probably goes without saying, but this book does contain spoilers.The author Paul Davies has done a superb job writing the book. I don't know how much involvement the author had in setting up the art format on the pages, but everything is easy to read. Almost every page has some information about what you're looking at, with insight from the developers of Insomniac Games; giving us perspective into their creative and design process.Every major character gets attention in the book, as well as some gadgets, equipment, and locations. There are quite a lot of collectible costumes that can be acquired in the video-game for Spider-Man, but only a few of the known revealed ones are shown unfortunately. I would've liked to have seen more costume designs, but it's a very minor gripe with me.The art book is slightly bigger than the "The Art of..." book by Marvel, but it's the exact same size as the movie books from Titan Books that covered both "Wonder Woman" and "Justice League", or the recent Star Wars books published by Abrams Books. I mention this because I like continuity of size in my books, and I like to see a publisher following a standard format.Overall this is an excellent book, and I think it compliments the amazing video-game superbly. I'm a huge fan of these art books, and I deeply appreciate the inside look into the creative process that happens behind-the-scenes. This book gets two thumbs-up from me, and I definitely recommend it if you enjoyed the video-game as well.
Nice companion piece to the amazing game! My only 2 gripes are it doesn't include any art from the fantastic Halloween section of the game, from a aesthetic standpoint that mission was gorgeous (I love Halloween) but it's not even mentioned at all here. My other complaint is that this game showcases New York in the fall-esc season and it looks great but again their aren't many pieces of art from the city. It mainly focuses on characters and indoor environments like Oscorp and Fisk's Tower. Great book, could have been better. What it does is give a gushing of love via insights from the Dev team. Not bad overall. But considering how artistically good the game looks I would have liked more full page concept art, less focus on the bland indoor environments and character bios.
I am a comic book fan in general, but especially when it comes to Spider-man. Naturally, I was super excited to receive Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-man (and have been playing it non-stop!). When I go in for collector's editions of games, I am usually most excited about the art book. Surprisingly, Insomniac's Collector's Edition was a bit lackluster, but I still wanted the art book, and this book is gorgeous. It richly captures all of the behind scenes work, from blue prints and sketches to screen captures of in-game action. I've only attached a few pictures so as not to reveal any characters you may not have encountered yet, and I added an additional photo for size comparison to other game art books. This book (and the game) are 10 for 10!!
If you collect art books (Like I do), are an artist looking at reference from the absolute best working in the industry (as I do), know someone that loves Spider-Man or are just interested in what went into this magical work of art of a game, then this book is something you likely also need in your life. It's a work of art itself. Cover to cover. This game is a masterpiece, so is this art book.
I would highly recommend this book. The artwork in this book is amazing, and you get to go behind the scenes. Crazy the amount of detail that went into the making of this wonderful game.
